Loretta Lynn, the Kentucky coal miner's daughter whose frank songs about life and love as a woman in Appalachia pulled her out of poverty and made her a pillar of country music, has died, her consulting firm confirmed to CBS News on Tuesday.
She was 90.
In a statement posted to Lynn's website, her family said she died Tuesday at her home in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee.
"Our precious mom, Loretta Lynn, passed away peacefully this morning, October 4th, in her sleep at home in her beloved ranch in Hurricane Mills," the family said.
They asked for privacy as they grieve and said a memorial will be announced later.
Before launching her career in the early 1960s, Lynn already had four children.
"I'd rock 'em to sleep, and that's where 'Doo' found out I could sing," Lynn, referring to her husband, told "CBS Sunday Morning" correspondent Mo Rocca in an interview.
"He'd sneak in the house, and I'd be singing 'White Christmas,' and there's two or three others I would be singing."
Her songs reflected her pride in her rural Kentucky background.
